Offline Files failing with the error "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
Hi,I have a network setup with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and an SBS 2003 Server as the DC and Server 2003 as a file server. All users have their home folders redirected to the file server share of \\FSERVER\USERS\Username\MyDocuments controlled through the AD.Previously in XP Pro this was then made as available offline and worked no problems. On the Windows 7 machine the option to make this as "always available offline" was there and is now ticked. Sync Centre starts up and begins sync'ing. After some time I see error messages for every file as "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." If I disconnected the LAN I can see the file and folder structure but each file has a grey X in the icon and can not be opened.I have tried the same setup on a Laptop running 32bit Ultimate and 64bit Ultimate. I have chosen individual files and created new files with the same result. Each file and folder has full rights and permissions.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Based on my research, please try the following: 1. Please ensure that the files are not accessing by security software, backup management software or Windows Search indexing etc. 2. Offline Files feature in Vista honoring oplocks to improve performance. Ensure that the oplocks is enabled on server and the client. Note: Perform a full-system backup before doing this. CLIENT: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\ OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1 Default: 0 (not disabled) Note: The OplocksDisabled entry configures Windows clients to request or not to request opportunistic locks on a remote file. SERVER: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1 Default: 1 (enabled) Note: The EnableOplocks entry configures Windows-based servers to allow or to deny opportunistic locks on local files. These servers include workstations that share files. For more information, please refer to: Configuring opportunistic locking in Windows Hope this help. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

The article that this refers to specifically excludes Windows 7 (and VISTA). I have the same issue running Windows 7 Pro x64 but we are using a Linux based NAS device that worked perfectly before we upgraded our clients laptops to Windows 7. I have applied the 2 registry settings auggested in this article but still have the problem that the offline file will not all syncrhronise. Some do but only about 30%.I also notice that there were two other keys:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb10\Parameters\ andHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb20\Parameters\Do they also require the EnableOplocks adding? Many thanks.

MS Tech Support, I have modified the registry as explained above on both the clients and server. I'm using folder redirection thru an AD policy same as KiwiEssex mentioned above but to a Standalone Windows 2003 Server thats not SBS or a DC. This has been working very well with the XP users for several years, however when I replace the old XP Dell laptops with New Dell windows 7 laptops, files will sync "TOO" the Windows 2003 server redirection location if a file is created in the redirected folder "Documents" on the new laptop client, which is great. However, files already "on" the server will not cache back to the client for use "offline" , NONE of the files will cache to the new client. Upon syncing, every file that is in the redirected location on the server for that user returns with error: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." These files are not in use, checking the open files on the server shows them not being accessed. This is a very frustrating issue as there seems to be no viable solution anywhere online and users must be able to have offline file access and proper syncing! I've been looking for a solution to this very weird issue for a couple months to no avail. We have 100's of XP clients that need to be moving to Windows 7 soon. This one issue has stopped us cold, seriously. Please help with a viable fix, where else should I look to resolve this issue? There was alot of MS fanfare of how great the new sync center changes where in Vista and Win 7, so far from a business standpoint its a deal breaker on moving to Windows 7 for us if this is not fixed. We have several clients having this same issue and finding no real solution other than disabling offline files altogether, especially thoughs with iTunes breaking completely when they go offline and can't access there music or podcasts, now thats a whole other nightmare Sync Center brought on. The suggested fixes below DO NOT work. I continue to receive the error on every new Win 7 laptop I've tried this on, even on some Vista clients. The server and clients were rebooted as instructed. CLIENT: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\ OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1 Default: 0 (not disabled) SERVER: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1 Default: 1 (enabled) Best Regards, Steve

I'm having exactly the same problem with a D-LINK NAS. Really annoying..

No its not been resolved, still waiting for MS to reply. The issue only happens if the redirected files are physically located on a pre Vista/Win7/Windows2008 OS. My over 100 users Redirected files are currently on a Windows 2003 Server. Redirection for the Windows 7 users works fine, they simply cannot sync their files back to their Win 7 client for offline usage. Now if I locate their redirected files to a Windows 7 PC which is limited to 20 connections or a Windows 2008 Server all works as it should. So the only solution at this point is to install a Windows 2008 Server permanently just for file redirection of Windows 7 laptops, which is insane. I'm still waiting for budget approval to get this done. Interestingly is that in testing this by moving a few userfiles to a share folder on a windows 7 pc, and then redirecting those win 7 users to that new share, win 7 sync center works correctly for win 7, but fails for windows XP users! So unless I can resolve this little twist of silliness with a Windows 2008 Server and XP, it looks like I may need to Redirect my XP Laptop Users to the Windows 2003 Server and the Vista/Windows 7 users to a Windows 2008 Server simply for user redirected files! Argggggh!! This has created a completely unnecessary king sized headache that daily must be dealt with by users manually using a robocopy script, and usually forgetting to do so before they go offline. I never know when a user is ready to go offline, so a task schedule isn't feasible to be sure there files are up to date on the client so they can access them offline in the field! Since 85 percent of my users are mobile, this is more than just a little inconvenient, its 4 aspirin a day just to function and a big gee thanks to MS for there great new sync center for job security. Its completely ridiculus for MS to allow this very important feature that has worked so well for XP users for many years to become so very broken in this manner while hyping the wonders of sync center. Its clearly not worth the fuss, its only fully functional as advertised in a post XP environment.

Could we just get someone from MS to confirm that this is a problem. It is frustrating to find the forums full of "abandonded" attempts to fix this problem. I have two customers with the same problem (Windows 7 and SBS 2003). Just to know if it should be working or not would be great. To get it fixed would of cause be even better ;-))

Fat chance... I have the same issue and have had no luck getting an answer.

Well - count me in as well, same problem. And I agree - all over the web people have problems with this but except this registry patch (the PARAMETERS branch is not even there on Windows 7) does not fix it for the workstation... So MS - PLEASE...

Hey guys, I wanted to share how I just fixed this after searching and having found many with the problem but no clear answers. The directions I found, even the ones posted by MS peeps, are clear as mud but after messing around with my server repeatedly and rebooting i finally set the server to the following [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRxSmb\Parameters] "OplocksDisabled"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters] "EnableOpLocks"=dword:00000001 Honestly, i think thats how it was set when i started The fix was actualy in Win 7 Client [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\mrxsmb\Parameters] "OplocksDisabled"=dword:00000000 it was set to 1 or "OplocksDisabled"=dword:00000001, after changing it to 0 and rebooting it started working. Just to clarify my setup is 2003 SBS with Win 7 Pro laptop. Pretty sad MS can even explain this, but hopefully my fix helps others too.

I'm having the same issue AND I don't seem to have the registry entry you noted. I have a new WD sharespace NAS and a new Windows 7 laptop (christmas was good this year!). I'm getting the same synch error and I know there is nothing running on the NAS and the files are not being accessed. Is there another fix or have you heard of any other fixes out there????
